Taping the Lateral Ankle
Step One
Products required for the taping of the lateral ankle are: underwrap, zinc oxide tape, Tuf skin, heel and lace pads and a pair of scissors. These should all be easily accessible to you throughout the taping. You may also want a cohesive bandage to further support the strapping.
| |
Step Two
Prepare and position the ankle joint for taping in a dorsi-flexed and slightly everted position which the patient must maintain whilst you are taping to ensure maximum effect.

Step Three
Spray "Tufskin" over the area where you will be taping, and then place heel and lace pads on the front and back of the ankle in the areas where friction hotspots are likely.
Step Four
Apply underwrap in a figure of eight fashion around the joint, ensuring that no creases are present as this may lead to friction blisters. This may require "housework" to ensure that the underwrap is applied as neatly as possible.

Step Five
Apply 2 strips of the zinc oxide tape, one at the top of the ankle and one at the base of the foot to act as anchors. These may be required to slightly overlap onto the skin to provide maximum support for the rest of the strapping.
Step Six
Apply a strip of zinc oxide tape from the medial side of the base stirrup, around the back of the heel to attach to the anchor on the lateral side of the stirrup.

Step Seven
Now apply a stirrup from the medial side to the lateral side of the top anchor, passing underneath the heel, ensuring that there are no creases in the tape.
Step Eight
Repeat step 6 again, slightly overlapping the previous tape by about one-third of the width of the previous tape applied.
Step Nine
Repeat step 7 again, slightly overlapping the previous tape by about one-third of the width of the previous tape applied.

Step Ten
Repeat steps eight and nine of required to add extra support on a larger ankle.
Step Eleven
"Lock" the base anchor in place with a strip to fasten the ends of the tape in place.
Step Twelve
"Close" the basket with strips around the front of the ankle to cover any gaps.

Step Thirteen
Apply a "heel lock" from the top of the taping, medially behind the heel.
Step Fourteen
The tape for the "heel lock" then passes laterally under the heel.

The tape then passes medially to cross over to the lateral side of the ankle to complete the "heel lock" and the taping for a lateral ankle instability.
