Step One
Products required for the taping of the lateral ankle are: underwrap, zinc oxide tape, Tuf skin, heel and lace pads and a pair of scissors. These should all be easily accessible to you throughout the taping. You may also want a cohesive bandage to further support the strapping.
Step Two
The client should have their knee in approximately 15 degrees flexion, either in standing with a roll of tape under the heel, or in supine lying with the knee slightly bent. Apply 2 anchors using stretchy-tape, one approximately 5cm above the knee, and one approximately 5cm below the knee. |

Step Three
Using zinc oxide tape, apply a diagonal strip from the posteromedial aspect of the proximal anchor to the anteromedial aspect of the distal anchor. Ensure that the anchor crosses the medial collateral ligament.
Step Four
Using zinc oxide tape, apply a diagonal strip from the posteromedial aspect of the distal anchor to the anteromedial aspect of the proximal anchor. Ensure that the 2 strips cross the medial collateral ligament.
Step Five
Apply a second symmetrical strip which runs parallel to the first strip applied, overlapping by a third of the width of the tape, but ensuring that the tape still crosses the medial collateral ligament.
| |
Step Six
Repeat step five with the other symmetrical strip as in step four. Ensure that the cross covers the medial collateral ligament. Repeat this step again if necessary to cover the area.
Step Seven
Reinforce the taping with an additional strip over the area to cover any exposed areas of skin, and reinforce the area over the medial collateral ligament further.
Step Eight
Lock the tape in place on the proximal end of the taping to secure the taping in place.
Step Nine
Lock the distal end of the taping in place with another anchor, as demonstrated.
Step Ten
Ensure the taping is neat and is supporting the medial collateral ligament, and that is restricting excessive medial laxity to the joint.
Step Eleven
To apply the cohesive bandage for additional support and stability, ask the client to stand up, and place a roll of tape under their heel to ensure that the knee remains in the 15 degrees of flexion.
Step Twelve
Begin the cohesive bandage at the proximal end of the taping and wrap the cohesive bandage around the knee in a figure of eight direction. Ensure that the cohesive bandage is not applied too tight to restrict blood flow, but make sure that the bandage is applied tight enough to support the joint and limit medial stress to the joint.
Step Thirteen
Fix the cohesive bandage in place with zinc oxide tape, and check there are no creases or areas likely to cause hotspots or friction when the client performs sporting activity.
